Sugar Is Our Family’s Demon

In a previous blog post I discussed my 4 year old daughter’s sensory, failure to thrive problems and how the pediatrician wanted to send us to a GI doctor to figure out why she was not growing.  (By the way that pediatrician kicked us out of her practice because we wanted an alternative vaccine schedule for my 2 year old).  My husband and I figured out it was linked to her diet which I discussed in this previous blog post….. I found the main culprit to be the sugar she ingests.  Since we altered her diet and eliminated sugar in her diet we have had great results such as her substantial growth (she was diagnosed failure to thrive in late 2014), her speech has greatly improved and HER BEHAVIOR is awesome (she literally transformed from what I was thought our next step was to contact a priest to a sweet little girl).

Well, this Halloween (2015) we had a sugar relapse……OMG, is all I got to say.  I left to drop off my teen and I walked in the house with my daughter feasting on candy.  Her behavior went down hill from there as she went into possession mode again and her tantrums started, her speech was terrible, she was extremely lethargic, she had big black bags under her eyes, and she stopped eating real food.  I refused to give her any more candy or sweets after Halloween and explained to my husband that her relapse was due to the sugar.  It was as though she was going through a drug detox for 4 days because on the 5th day she came out of the darkness.  MY LITTLE GIRL was back.  Nope, her little body can’t handle sugar on any level other then in the form of fruit and no fruit juice is allowed as well!

Sugar is terrible on many levels.  It is in many foods we eat and renamed to conceal it’s identity.  Educate yourself to understand other names for sugar. Here are some of the names:

Anhydrous dextrose, brown sugar, cane crystals, cane sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, crystal dextrose, evaporated cane juice, fructose sweetener, fruit juice concentrates, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, liquid fructose, malt syrup, maple syrup, molasses, pancake syrup, raw sugar, sugar, syrup and white sugar.  Other types of sugar you might commonly see on ingredient lists are fructose, lactose and maltose. Fructose is sugar derived from fruit and vegetables; lactose is milk sugar; and maltose is sugar that comes from grain (Source 1).

Completely eliminating sugar may not be possible but reducing it should be a goal and I believe it is a real goal.  Always look at the first few ingredients on a label as those are the main ingredients in a item you purchase.
